Pupillage at 4 New Square
A pupillage at 4 New Square will give you a real insight into what it is like to practise in a leading commercial set of chambers. Our 70 barristers have a strong reputation for insurance work, professional negligence, construction, product liability and financial services.
Our aim is to recruit two new tenants each year and it is our express intention, wherever possible, to source those tenants from our own 12 month pupils. As it is our hope and ambition that each of our pupils should reach the required objective standard for tenancy, it follows that our general recruitment practice is to select two 12 month pupils each year.
What’s on offer?
We aim to offer two 12 month pupillages each year.
We occasionally offer second six month pupillages and sometimes third six month pupillages to exceptional candidates.
In summer 2010, we are seeking to recruit up to two Third Six pupils. Further information and details of the application procedure may be found here: Third Six.
Funding and awards
From October 2010, our 12 month pupillages for the pupillage year 2010/2011 will each carry an annual award of £50,000, which comprises an award of £40,000 and guaranteed earnings in the second 6 months of £10,000. No expenses or fees are payable to Chambers in respect of earnings in the second 6 months of pupillage. For the 2010/2011 year £2,500 of the award will be paid to successful candidates on accepting an offer of pupillage with us. Up to a third of the remaining £37,500 award can be drawn down during the BVC year.
The relevant figures for the 2011/2012 pupillage year (applications during the 2010 summer season) are a total annual award of £60,000, comprising a £50,000 award (of which £5,000 is paid immediately upon acceptance of the offer and a further £15,000 can be drawn down during the BVC year) and guaranteed earnings in the second 6 months of £10,000. Pupils are allowed to keep any earnings from their second 6 months, including any earned in excess of the £10,000 guarantee.

Applications
4 New Square is a member of the Pupillage Portal scheme (formerly OLPAS) and applications for 12 month pupillage are accepted only through that scheme.
Applicants for Third Six pupillage should submit a full CV and covering letter by e-mail, if possible, to the Pupillage Administrator (pupillage@4newsquare.com). E-mails should have “Third Six Application” in the subject line.
Deadlines
Interviews for 12 month pupillages are conducted in May, June and July, following the Pupillage Portal deadline for submissions. Contact Pupillage Portal for details of deadlines: www.pupillages.com
Tenancy decisions are made around late June of each year.
We do not consider or offer Third Six month pupillages until after the tenancy decision has been taken in relation to our 12 month pupils.
Applications for Third Six pupillage commencing in August/September 2010 must be received by 12 July 2010.
