Profile

Roger has a mixed commercial practice with particular specialisms in professional liability, construction, insurance and international disputes.  In recent years he has appeared and advised in a succession of high-value and high-profile cases both in litigation and arbitration (international and national).

He regards his most important tasks as sorting out the central issues from the peripheral; giving clear and consistent advice to his clients and then devoting all the time and trouble necessary for the effective presentation of those issues.

He has been consistently praised by clients and directories for the quality of his advice and his written and oral advocacy.  He is listed by Chambers and Legal 500 as a leading silk in the fields of professional negligence and construction and by Chambers in International Arbitration:  General Commercial and Insurance

The width and breadth of his litigation practice is shown by the cases he has appeared in recently.

He has a well established national and international arbitration practice.  He has acted for the Czech Republic in a very substantial bi-lateral investment claim, for a French Bank in relation to a warranty claim against the American sellers of a car hire group, or a firm of accountants in relation to work done on liquidations in Eastern Europe; for the operators of an Eastern European Grain Handling Terminal against their joint venture partners; for an American power company in relation to the refurbishment of power stations in Wales, for contractors in relation to numerous claims arising out the construction of motorways, and for a joint venture partner in relation to the development of a marine engine..

He does a large amount of work concerned with insurance and reinsurance coverage.  Much of this is arbitrated.  He has particular specialisms in relation to the application of construction and project insurance; the application of re-insurance treaties to claims for asbestos related diseases and the question of the proper application of clams made policies in relation to notifications.  He recently appeared for two of the insurance companies in the Trigger litigation which is now going on appeal.

Roger sits regularly as an International and National Arbitrator in substantial multi-million pound disputes.

Roger and John Powell Q.C. are the General Editors of Jackson and Powell on Professional Liability.
