Four New Square is a leading commercial and civil set of barristers comprising 67 members, of whom 17 are Queen's Counsel.

 

We act as specialist advocates and advisers in a wide range of civil disputes and as expert advisers in non-contentious matters.

 

We have a particularly high reputation in the field of professional liability.  The leading practitioners' work on the subject, Jackson & Powell on Professional Negligence, was written by Rupert Jackson QC (now Lord Justice Jackson) and John L. Powell QC, and continues to be written and edited by members of chambers.

Languages spoken in chambers include French, German, Hindi, Italian, Serbo-Croat, Spanish and Welsh.

Mr Justice Foskett hands down judgment in Atomic Veterans Litigation (Leigh-Ann Mulcahy QC, Dr Peter Feldschreiber and Katie Powell)

Sue Carr QC and Shail Patel recently acted for Somerfield, defeating a high-profile £2.7m High Court claim brought against the retailer by a former supplier.

The Inquest into the deaths of two submariners on HMS Tireless two years ago concluded on 24th March 2009, with a detailed narrative verdict identifying systematic failures in the Ministry of Defence's procedures. Jonathan Hough acted as sole Counsel to the inquiry.

 

4 New Square team Sue Carr QC, Ben Hubble and Helen Evans recently secured a landmark victory in the Commercial Court in AXA Insurance v Akther & Darby & Ors. The decision of Mr Justice Flaux, handed down on 27 March 2009, marks a significant development in the law of limitation, in particular in relation to the application of the decision of the House of Lords in Law Society v Sephton, in a claim valued at around £65million.
